How Car Key Replacement Works — Cutting, Chipping, and Programming Explained
A replacement car key is actually two separate jobs bundled into one service call: the physical cut and the electronic pairing. The mechanical cut reproduces the precise blade pattern that operates your ignition and door locks. Our technicians use computerized key-cutting machines that read your vehicle identification number (VIN) or an existing key trace to generate an exact duplicate blade profile — this is not a guess-and-grind process. For vehicles where a working key still exists, we can also duplicate directly from the original.
The second half of the job is programming. Transponder keys (common on most vehicles built after the mid-1990s) contain a small chip that must be synchronized with your car's engine control unit before the vehicle will start. Proximity fobs and smart keys add another layer — they use rolling encrypted codes and require dedicated software to pair correctly. Skipping or botching this step leaves you with a key that physically turns in the ignition but still won't start the car.
